I have been able to pick up an individuals FRS (1/2 watt) Radio Shack wireless intercom from 28 miles and they only have a short antenna inside the house.

This is the manuals page for Midland. (Previously tuned to GMRS frequencies. There is a compander option which might help when talking Wide to Narrow band. You can name each channel. Some repeaters have different tones for input and output. Currently, Midland don’t offer any headsets for the MXT400. You can change from FMN narrow 12.5KHz to FM wide 20KHz or 25KHz. Note the ONLY emission certified is  10K5F3E. I'm still testing on which antenna gives the best performance. They could also do it through the menu and make the RP light flash when WB mode is selected. The Luiton LT-590 is also available from TYT as the TYT TH-9000d, a Part 90 UHF radio. I do travel to RI and CT a couple times a year, family and friends.

of course they wouldn't! Performs outstanding. It'seasy to use (if I can do it anybody can).........I run it on low power except for a couple channels that are active I run it on medium power. I was thinking of pulling the trigger on a Midland MXT400 to use as a base, but don't want to do it unless I can be sure I can change it to WB and use dual separate (in-out) tones for repeaters. Anybody else running the MXT400............? Not sure they can properly do 11K0F3E now.

The Midland MXT400 is certified and it appropriately transmits on narrow band. When selecting an external speaker, ensure the speaker has 8-ohm impedance and is rated for 4.0 watts.

Unfortunate that it is not FULLY compatible with existing wideband equipment. The other frequencies you will find are locked on all other channels. I put up a Telewave ANT450D6-9 at one site a few years ago and it works really well. I might have to spring for the Midland antenna. *Antenna, cable, and antenna mount sold separately. I have the MXT115, anyone having trouble talking to repeaters on it???

LOL. Any doubt that the MXT400 is a Luiton LT-590 on Prosac have been removed. You may apply for a GMRS license if you are 18 years or older and not a representative of a foreign government. Add 8 WB repeater pairs 23-30 . If so, it won't work on 462MHz. I ran the software Dropbox that berkinet ran and on an old win7 machine for the same reason and turned out ok. It is starting to look better though. There are a bunch of different manufactures and configurations. or some place SE of my location. Thank you for your comment. He runs on Medium power and makes a great connection with our base/repeater. The issue is without the receive side of a GMRS transceiver being able to receive wide band from such a repeater, communications are impossible. So far, the Midland MXTA11 "seems" to perform just a tad better then the DPD antenna....(all though I like the all black DPD look). I do not know the height of the repeater in Astoria.

My radio dose about 50 watts and it's really all i need. Easy to install, easy to use, and offers good communication clarity Jeep to Jeep or Jeep to handheld. I may hook the meter up in the next few days and see...(weather has been miserable). Tx narrow to Rx wide = will be quieter audio. I did a little googling and could not find a spec sheet for the MXT400 on line, but it make since. (Many options between 5kHz and 50kHz), CHANNEL SPACING  = occupied bandwidth (narrow or wide): 12.5, 20 & 25 kHz. Midland MXT400 GMRS radio.

Well the GMRS radio was another "layer" of comms for my prepping gear. 1. I am sure there are a lot of interested people waiting to hear. As a result some of us with newer radios get audio clipping when we receive the repeater. The only and I mean only little fuss I have with the 400 is I would like the ability to change the screen color.
